Dachshund 101 - Life Partners...

If you believe the news dachshunds are the latest must-have fashion trend. For those of us who are owned by dachshunds that strikes fear into our hearts. We know that getting a dachshund needs to be a serious decision, and one not entered into lightly.

Like deciding to get married, deciding to get a dachshund means committing to be its life partner.

In fact, with today's divorce rate, and the dachshund life expectancy of 10-20 years, the relationship you have with a dachshund may well outlast many marriages.

Over the course of your relationship you will be groomer, dietician, chauffeur, trainer, mentor, confidante, policeman, prison guard,  attorney, mediator, counselor, emergency responder, landscaper, architect, teacher, physical therapist, body guard, accountant, trustee, power of attorney, agent, guardian, and BFF.

Getting a dachshund without researching where it comes from is like taking the first pretty young thing you meet in Vegas and racing off to the Elvis chapel to tie the knot before the effects of the last five cocktails wears off. It might seem like a good idea at the time but you are in for a hell of a suprise when the hangover kicks in.

Buyer Beware...

If you are thinking of buying a dachshund puppy in the near future, or know someone who is, please proceed with extreme caution.

Please read up on how to source a responsible breeder, and if buying in the local area visit the breeder's property and view mother and pups.

Make your assessment on the health and well being of both puppy and mother - there is nothing worse than finding out after the fact that you have supported a puppy farmer.

Be aware that there are people who do not put the welfare of their dogs first. We have reason to believe that puppies from such people may be coming up for sale in the Perth area in the next 6-8 weeks.

Please do not buy them and in doing so support this awful practice. Don't think that buying one is saving a puppy, it is really supporting the mistreatment of the parents.

Ask lots of questions of the breeder. Ask lots of questions in our facebook group. If in any doubt, email us at longdogswa@gmail.com.

A Responsible Breeder...

People often ask us for recommendations on where to get a dachshund.

Long Dogs WA is a social walking group for dachshund owners in Western Australia. We do not represent any specific breeders. We urge anyone thinking of getting a dachshund to read the following guidelines on responsible breeders.

Responsible breeders

A responsible breeder will recognise that today’s society puts a large expectation on the role that a dog plays in our lives today. There is a high priority on the well being of the breeding of dogs both socially and physically.

When you are purchasing a pup, you are taking on the responsibility for that dog for approximately 10-15 years.   It is therefore important you do your homework and ask the questions.
